Why did we write a book?

That’s Not My Training System was created as a reflective and thought-provoking book designed to challenge outdated physical intervention practices in health, education, and care settings. Inspired by the real-life experiences of frontline staff and trainers, the book uses simple, powerful illustrations to spark discussion, encourage self-awareness, and promote safer, more respectful strategies when working with vulnerable individuals.

We wrote this book to shine a light on the unspoken challenges many professionals face when systems, culture, or training don’t align with best practice. Drawing on years of hands-on experience, the book doesn’t preach — it invites reflection. It’s been carefully designed to be accessible, visual, and honest.

Whether you’re a front line worker, trainer, parent, or decision-maker, That’s Not My Training System encourages you to pause, reflect, and ask: “Is this really the best way?”

Testimonials

It’s relevant not only for those who have experienced restrictive practices, but also for staff, carers and families seeking to challenge outdated or harmful approaches.”

— Adele Pemberton, Operations Manager / Responsible Individual

“I just finished reading ‘That’s not Safer Handling’ and I have to say, I absolutely loved it! It’s a powerful tool for starting those honest, much-needed conversations about poor practice. I can already picture it being used in care homes, hospitals, community settings — anywhere good care matters.”

— Liz Stanton MBE

“This is a bold, intelligent, and refreshingly human piece of work. The illustrations provoke reflection without blame. It challenges assumptions and encourages a trauma-informed, respectful approach to care. I’d recommend it to anyone involved in training, education, care, or frontline work.”

— Ashley Robinson, Assistant Director at the Home Office

"I loved the book, I would say about it the following:
Excellent resource for critical thinking. It proves we can learn from our mistakes and make the best out of negative situations that would be avoided if proper and frequent training was taking place."
